Where the images on this site come from, what we made ourselves, and how to reach us about a work pictured here.
Artworks pictured
The sculptures, murals, and installations pictured on this site are the work of their artists. Copyright, and any moral rights that apply where a piece stands, stay with the artist or their estate.
A work appearing here is not a claim on it, a license to reproduce it, or an endorsement by the artist. It is pictured because it is part of the public landscape these guides describe.
Captions cite what the source record supports: title, artist, year, and location where known. Where the maker is not recorded, the caption says so.
Photography
Editorial photographs come from three public-domain collections.
- Wikimedia Commons
Contemporary public art: sculpture, murals, trails, and installations photographed in place.
- The J. Paul Getty Museum
Open-content holdings: historical artworks, antiquities, and archival photography.
- The National Gallery of Art
Open-access holdings: paintings, drawings, and design records.
Every image is CC0 or otherwise in the public domain, and none of the three institutions requires a credit line. Rights metadata is kept with the image library and rechecked as the library grows.
In that metadata, the photographer is the person who released the photograph, not the artist who made the work in it. Captions do not credit the photographer as the artist.
Maps
Maps in product screenshots use OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License, served as vector tiles by Protomaps. The map styling is ours.
Type and icons
The site is set in Inter, by Rasmus Andersson, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. It is self-hosted from the official release, and the license ships with the font file.
Interface icons are Material Symbols by Google, under the Apache License 2.0. The share buttons at the end of an article use Simple Icons, under CC0 1.0. Both are delivered through Iconify.
What we made
Product screenshots and mockups, the logo and wordmark, and the cover art on every article are ours. Cover art is generated at build time from the brand palette.
Takedowns and corrections
If you made a work pictured on this site, or took one of the photographs, and want it removed, email hey@civiccollection.com with the page and the image. We will take it down.
If a caption is wrong, whether the artist, the title, or a missing credit, send the correction the same way and we will fix it.
